A rich and penetrating Nuits St. Georges, the Les Porrets vineyard is at the sweet spot on the Cote d'Or mid-slope, with the ideal mix of free-draining chalky marl over lime bedrock. At this south-east facing aspect, Pinot Noir is able to reach full ripeness slowly while retaining acidity and gaining minerality. A bold Premier Cru with black fruit as well as red, this wine also has the serious spine to improve for decades in cellar. So rare to find this much flavour in Burgundy for the price!

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

90-93/100 Stephen Tanzer

"(from 50-year-old, largely massale vines located adjacent to Les Cailles; Bouchard acquired this 0. 38-hectare vineyard through an exchange with Domaine de Montille; vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright red-ruby. Aromas of blackberry and red licorice are lifted by a strong floral component. Much more feminine and aromatic than the comparatively powerful style from Domaine Gouges, offering bright redcurrant, leather and mocha flavors framed and lifted by strong but harmonious acidity and pepper and spice notes from the stem component. I find the balance of sweetness and acidity exhilarating. The sappy finish features a late note of chocolate. Incidentally, Weber is slowly increasing his use of 400-liter barrels for both the red and white crus at Bouchard."
