A super-stylish drop, Boneline offer a full-textured Chardonnay with 20% oak, lees aging and some buttery notes. But they also exploit Waipara's lime-rich soils for flinty minerality and clean green apple and stone fruits. Poise and complexity like this is what makes Waipara like Chablis in France - think Premier Cru level! Clever and forward-thinking, serious food Chardy. Try this!

Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.

What The Critics Say

17.5/20 Raymond Chan

"11 different clones of Chardonnay, hand-picked, WBP and fully barrel-fermented to 13.2% alc., a small portion of the wine fermented with skins, the wine aged in 20% new French oak undergoing batonnage and approx. 25% through MLF. Bright, light straw-yellow colour, lighter edged. The nose is very elegant and finely proportioned with fresh and bright citrus fruits and white stonefruits, unveiling subtle creamy barrel-ferment elements along with delicate complexing flinty and minerally notes, revealing oak toast in the glass. Medium-bodied, this is tightly bound and very elegant in proportion, with delicate citrus and stonefruit flavours harmoniously melded with spicy, toasty oak and creamy, lemon-curd MLF. The mouthfeel is lively and poised with bright lacy acidity and the wine follows a fine and dry textural thread leading to a racy, complex-nuanced finish with some underlying creaminess. A match with seafood over the next 4 years. Oct 2015"

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Showing excellent cellaring potential, the 2014 vintage (5*) was hand-picked and matured in French oak barrels (20 per cent new). Mouthfilling, rich and finely balanced, it is youthful, with good weight, strong grapefruit and peach flavours, fresh acidity, a hint of butterscotch and a crisp, slightly creamy, lingering finish."
