Its Origins

Alongside Massolino the barolos from Azelia are eye-watering bargains in the fine wine world. Anyone with a love of the nebbiolo grape should search out these under-valued Barolos for they are some of the most age- worthy wines in the world. In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi's father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo, who bears the name of his grandfather and who represents the fifth generation of wine producers. The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Parkers Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"I have not tasted this Riserva since the 2007 vintage, so it's a great delight to sample the Azelia 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera today. In the bottle with the gold and white label, fruit comes from a tiny and little-known site on the east-facing slope opposite Lazzarito. The vines are 95 years old on average, although some are as old as 120. They produce just two or three clusters per vine. This is another vineyard site with closed conditions and cool air currents that produce very firm, compact and age-worthy wines. Hence the Riserva designation. This is a special wine that sees an outstanding five years of aging in oak casks and another five years in bottle before its commercial release. Tasted now 10 years after the harvest, you get a delightful expression with budding tones of evolution with black licorice and camphor ash. It ages in oak casks for five years, with another five years in bottle. You feel the tannins at the back, but they are soft and silky. This is a gorgeous wine that rewards those who drink it now. Only 3,100 bottles exist. Drink 2023-2045"

95/100 James Suckling

"Attractive mineral notes with dried red fruit, nut shell, red spices and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied with compact but already supple tannins. Meaty and long with a round finish. So fine and silky. Already attractive, but still can age."

Winemakers Note

Bricco Voghera in Serralunga d’Alba is the oldest vineyard in Azelia's portfolio, with vines averaging 95 years old! The oldest of them well in excess of 120 years old, pre-dating phylloxera. Aged in large casks for 5 years, with another 5 years in bottle. The nose is explosive, jumping out of the glass. Violets, lavender, acacia, and black cherry. Dried flowers, dried fruits, great freshness and aromatic intensity. The palate is energetic and lively with superb acidity and freshness. Black cherry, prune, blackberry with rose, violet and dark chocolate. Round tannins, generous, with endless length. This is a clear example of why everyone should be buying Barolo to age, because even at 10 years old this is barely showing any signs of development, it is so youthful and alive. A wine of monumental pedigree.
