A classic big-styled Gisborne Chardonnay from a superb vintage. Heavily discounted from its premium price, it's had all the bells and whistles which cost a lot of money in making top Chardonnay. Made by Steve Voysey -- one of NZ's top tier winemakers -- it's fat and creamy but with real sophistication. Its Origins

Ashwood Estate is the result of good friends Murray McPhail and Nick Nobilo. Murray had been growing grapes on his land for 17 years on the Poverty Bay flats when Nick helped him to create the Ashwood Estate Pinot Gris. At Ashwood, they have embraced the romance of traditional winemaking techniques. For instance, none of the vineyards are irrigated which allows them to reflect the characteristic of each season within the vintage. All of the wines are fermented only in wood, no stainless steel. This provides the soft texture on the palate which is a hallmark characteristic of our wine.

"Brilliant, even straw colour with lemon-green hues, a little pale on rim. This has a firmly concentrated, rich, bright and vibrant nose of ripe citrus and yellow stonefruits entwined with subtle, creamy, nutty barrel-ferment and mealy notes, along with some fragrant and toasty barrel hints. The aromatics are refreshing and steely, unfolding nuances of flinty minerals. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and refined in expression with a concentrated core of citrus and yellow stonefruits melded with gentle complexing layers of creamy, nutty, barrel-ferment flavours and mealy and toasty nuances. The mouthfeel is refreshing with fine, lacy acidity, and the wine follows a refined, textural line that leads to an elegant, long, lingering finish with stonefruit and nutty nuances. This is a beautifully refined and elegant Chardonnay with complex fruit and oak layers, and a vibrant, refreshing mouthfeel.
