The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.

"64% clone 777 and 36% clone 667 from ‘Block 8’ on the home estate, fermentation initiated with indigenous yeast, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.73% alc., the wine spending 21 days on skins and aged 9 months 20% new oak. Moderately deep ruby-red colour with light purple hues on rim. The nose is fresh and fragrant with elegantly expressed, intense, pure red cherry fruit, unfolding nuances of herbs, red liquorice and nutty oak with aeration. Medium-full bodied, tightly bound and focussed flavours of red cherries, red liquorice and herbs are lifted by red florals. The mouthfeel is bright and lively with fresh, near-racy acidity enhancing the fruit sweetness. The wine follows a very fine and powdery-textured, firm line which carries the flavours to a long, lingering finish of dark cherries. This is a tightly bound, focussed, racy Pinot Noir with cherry and red liquorice flavours and a firm line.
