Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Andrew Caillard MW

"Medium deep colour. Intense dark cherry, satsuma plum, cola, violet aromas with savoury oak notes. Richly concentrated and supple with smooth dark berry fruits, plentiful chocolaty textures and mocha, vanilla, toasty nuances. Finishes bitter sweet with long tannin plume. Elegant, generous and complex. Delicious benchmark wine." Drink 2016 - 2028

95/100 Bob Campbell

"Dense, seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with dark berry, cedar and spice flavours. Nicely structured with fine, ripe tannins that give obvious cellaring potential, although the wine can be appreciated now." Drink 2015 - 2023

19.5/ 20 Raymond Chan

"A barrel selection wine, being a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, indigenous yeast fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 22 months in 37.5% new French oak. Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in appearance. The nose is full, ich and plush with aromas of very ripe blackcurrant and cassis fruit along with blackberries, black plums and lifted, exotic oak. Some dusty, toasty complexities unfold. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich and plush, sweetly succulent fruit flavours of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, layered with spices, exotic oak and nuances of iron-earth and black ink. There is considerable extraction and grip, the tannins very powdery and fine-grained, balancing the fruit sweetness. The mouthfeel is bright, vibrant and showing energy and drive, leading to a very long and sustained finish of opulent fruit and oak notes. This is a very full, rich and plush Cabernet/Merlot blend with sweetly ripe fruit, exotic oak and plenty of fine structure. Match with rich game meat dishes over the next 10-12+ years."
