Established in 1999, Prophet’s Rock has become one of New Zealand’s most consistent boutique producers. The name comes from Central Otago’s goldmining pioneers (a physical landmark on a local claim), and the winery has retained an intensely local focus on its original vineyards and terroir - and the varieties that thrive there. Longtime winemaker Paul Pujol carried this ethic back from early work with legendary producers in France, especially in Burgundy, and with Maison Kuentz-Bas in Alsace. Prophet’s Rock maintain deep values of sustainable vineyard management as well as a very European sensibility, allowing wines to express each vintage. While capturing beautiful varietal expression, they pursue in each wine the less obvious - but more satisfying and food orientated - virtues of vinous texture, balance, complexity, and length. In doing so they can achieve an understated depth, harmony, and sometimes extreme age-worthiness that is highly unusual in New Zealand. Their home block is on an elevated site in Bendigo, with the ‘second’ vineyard Rocky Point in Southern Bendigo, on a steep site above lake Dunstan.

"Released five years after the vintage, there are 736 bottles of the 2013 Retrospect Pinot Noir, which comes from a single parcel of clone 5 (Pommard). It's deep, dark and chocolaty, rich and dense with concentrated black cherry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel and a long, potent finish."

"Deepish garnet-red colour with a good heart and lighter brick-red hues on the rim. The bouquet is full, solid and deeply concentrated and packed with a heart of complex savoury dark-red berry fruits layered with waves of secondary aromas of undergrowth and mushrooms, earth, dried herbs and a touch of game. Full-bodied, the palate is mouthfilling with concentrated flavours of savoury red fruits entwined harmoniously with undergrowth, mushrooms, earth, dried herbs and masses of secondary detail. The fruit is still rich and sweet, quite mouthfilling in a stylish and reserved way. The fruit presence is matched by considerable structure and grip, the tannins fine-grained, but firm at the core. The mouthfeel is beginning to round and show signs of supple accessibility, but the wine has power, linearity and drive, with excellent underlying acidity and tension. The acidity carries the concentrated flavours to a sustained finish. Showing considerable secondary complexity, this has the fruit richness and structure to see another decade of evolution. Match with slow-cooked game meat.
