One of the most subtly powerful and impressive examples of this native Sicilian grape. The Nero d'Avola grape is said to originate in this locally famous town, the Noto DOC. Here Planeta's exceptional investment of ancient terroir and vines, along with state of the art winemaking, have produced a black-fruited and ripe but silky pinnacle of their portfolio. Effortless to drink yet deeply enriched by its place and tradition, this top Sicilian wine is gorgeous.

Nero d'Avola

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"The 2013 Noto Santa Cecilia is a smooth and delineated expression with dark fruit tones of cherry and plum that rise to the top. The wine shows no rough edges and the mouthfeel is velvety and rich. It sees 21 days of skin maceration and undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. The finished wine is then aged in two and three-year-old Allier barrique for 14 months. The grape used here is 100% Nero d'Avola. This is a very impressive vintage." Drink 2017 - 2028

91/100 Vinous, Ian D'Agata

"Medium red-ruby. Ripe but refined aromas of blackberry, red cherry, tar and licorice. Enters bright but generous on the palate, then shows a more saline but also creamy nuance to the flavors of spicy dark plum, licorice and herbs. Sound acidity and a touch of minerality give shape to the lingering, floral, clean finish." Drink 2017 - 2023

16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Lustrous, youthful ruby. Much more marked by oak than the 2014 and with a certain coolness on the nose. Juicy and almost a little tart but certainly elegant with persistent sandy tannins and long red-fruit finish. Needs time. (WS)." Drink 2017 - 2026
