A complex top Pinot Noir from Waipara's old hands, Pegasus Bay. Lovely sun-facing terraces have been a nearly 30 year home for Pegasus' older vines, some on original rootstocks (very rare in New Zealand). But they still only make this wine in the best years and do this Burgundy-style, hand-harvesting in stages to capture a variety of red and black fruit flavours along with some whole bunches in the natural ferment. The result is deep quality and textural restraint with, however, a dazzling display of classical Waipara wild herb, berry and spice underpinned by earthy minerality. Seriously dimensional yet refined and all class -- the allocation is small, so don't wait!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"Bright full red. Pungent, wild aromas of raspberry, herbs, white pepper and game; in a distinctly meaty Burgundian style. Then smooth, savory and fine-grained in the mouth, with lovely early complexity to the red fruit, smoked meat, rose petal and peppery spice flavors; still some CO2 to be absorbed. Boasts a suave texture for the vintage and conveys an impression of brooding energy. Finishes spicy, subtle and long, with lingering notes of red berries, minerals and earth. A selection of the estate's best barrels, this is routinely one of New Zealand's elite pinot noirs."

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2012 vintage)

"Pegasus Bay's flagship Pinot Noir is a rich and complex wine with impressive weight and intensity. Strong plum, dried fruit and dark berry flavours with savoury oak, coffee and mixed spice characters. Powerful wine with obvious cellaring potential 10/8/2015."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2012 vintage)

"For its top Waipara red, Pegasus Bay wants 'a heavenly voice, a shapely body and a velvety nose'. Based on the oldest vines, it is matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (50 per cent new). The 2012 vintage (5*) is deep and youthful in colour. A powerful, silky-textured red, with concentrated cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, possessing a strong sense of depth and potential, it is lovely now, but still youthful and likely to be long-lived."
