A super-elegant Sauvignon that's normally $25 and worth even more. One of Neudorf's many quiet achievers - not a flagship variety just one they happen to make better than almost anyone. The acidity and herbal nuance is gorgeously delicate, which allows all kinds of subtle fruit and mineral elements to come through. Decanter judged it New Zealand's best - truly a 'grown-up' Sav for aperitif or seafood. Try it!

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

94/100 (and Top NZ Sauvignon) Decanter

"One of New Zealand’s most reliable names. This (2014 )has a beautifully textured and rounded palate of guava, lemongrass and peach brightened by subtle toasty oak, leesy complexity and zingy acidity. Far removed from a stereotypical Kiwi Sauv Blanc, and one that will age well."

Michael Cooper

Neudorf is looking for a Sauvignon Blanc 'with texture, that is complex and satisfying'. Partly (20 per cent) fermented and matured for five months in old French puncheons, the (2013 vintage) (4*) is dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar) and mouthfilling, with a touch of wood-derived complexity and concentrated, ripe tropical-fruit flavours, woven with fresh acidity.
