A gorgeous little Chard and superb value at this hefty discount . We gratefully grabbed a chunk of this when they cleared out some library stock. This line from Mission is always exceptional but 2013 vintage is even better. With a third of grapes selected and given the full treatment - hand-harvested, French oak fermented and lees-aged for 14 months - the core of this wine is pure quality. A good recipe, as the result is a softly generous Chard with a gentle harmony and finesse that is rare to absent in anything near this price. Jump in.

Its Origins

Mission Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery. The French Marist Mission was established in Hawkes Bay in 1851, producing table and sacramental wine on its property. The first recorded sale of wine dated to 1870 and Mission Estate remained in production while New Zealand spent more than a century as a very small wine consumer. But as the market exploded late last century their vineyards, infrastructure and traditional knowledge placed them far ahead of the curve on quality wine production. Today they still work hard to remain there, with a commanding portfolio from widely available labels up to top single vineyard wines. Most remarkable perhaps, for fine wine customers, have been the grey-labelled VS series wines, which for years have delivered under $20 Chardonnay, Syrah and other varieties made with reliably impressive attention to quality, harmony and finesse.

What The Critics Say

17.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Hawke’s Bay fruit, two-thirds tank-fermented and one-third hand-picked, WBP, barrel-fermented and aged on lees 14 months in French oak, the wine at 13.0% alc. Full, even straw-yellow colour ith light golden hues. The nose is soft and gently full with ripe citrus fruit and yellow stonefruit aromas, subtly building in breadth and detail, revealing mealy and oaky elements and a harmonious creamy nutty and buttery amalgam. The aromatics retain an underlying freshness and liveliness throughout. Medium-full bodied, gently rich and mouthfilling flavours of ripe citrus and yellow stonefruits are the feature on palate. The fruit unfolds savoury, mealy interest and creamy barrel-ferment elements combined with nuts and hints of butter. The mouthfeel is fresh and lively with lacy acidity providing energy and poise, and the wine follows a fine-textured line that leads to a piquant finish with citrus and nutty, oaky notes. This is a lively, but gently rich, mouthfilling, citrussy Chardonnay with creamy textures and nutty, buttery layers. Match with roasted poultry and pork dishes over the next 3+ years. 17.5/20 Aug 2015 RRP $17.99."

91/100 Sam Kim Wine Orbit Magazine

This is elegant, poised and harmonious, displaying attractive aromas of stone fruit, mango, toasted nut and vanilla on the nose. The palate is ripe and concentrated with creamy texture, finishing long and tasty. Youthful yet beautifully integrated and offers loads of bright fruit flavours as well as delicate oak complexity. At its best: now to 2018.
