32% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot, 12% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon
First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon. Man O War's flagship blended red from a top vintage predictably delivers a rich and complex wine that's a medley of many berry, spice and dried herb flavours. Sweet fruit gives the wine drinkability and depth. A very stylish red. 2/6/2017." Drink 2017 - 2026
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"A dramatic Bordeaux-style, offering glorious aromas of creme de cassis, spiced plum, cocoa, cedar and cigar box on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is magnificently weighted and expansive. The wine offers both fruit richness and savoury complexity, superbly enhanced by velvety texture and silky tannins. Harmonious and symphonic with layers of engaging delicious flavours. A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon. At its best: now to 2023. $49.50. www.manowarvineyards.co.nz. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2023
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"This powerful red, grown at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, is typically based on Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with minor portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The classy 2013 vintage (5*) is a blend of Cabernet Franc (32 per cent), Merlot (29 per cent), Petit Verdot (16 per cent), Malbec (12 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (11 per cent). Densely coloured, it is sturdy and bold, with very generous, youthful blackcurrant and plum flavours, showing excellent ripeness and concentration, good tannin support, and plenty of cellaring potential; best drinking 2020+."
