Dark and complex, this impressive wine is our own import and shows the phenomenal potential of the Aglianico grape. Holding together the brooding black fruit is a beautifully focussed and fine structure, with the grape's noted savoury-mineral dimension all knitted in there too. Will stand up to intense food, this wine is seriously compelling and complex for the price.

Its Origins

Founded in 1968, the Di Majo estate cultivates more than 200 acres under vine. In order to ensure consistent, high-quality production for all the estate’s wines, Alessio Di Majo hired renowned oenologist Riccardo Cotarella as a consultant. In addition to producing quality wine at an outstanding value, the Di Majo family is dedicated to practicing environmentally sound agriculture. The Di Majo Norante winery sits on the estate of the Marquis Norante of Santa Cristina in the region of Molise, along the Adriatic Sea between Puglia and Abruzzo. The cultivation of vines in this area dates back to 500 BC, when the region was inhabited by two pre-Roman civilizations, the Sanniti and the Osci. The estate has been dedicated to growing vines since the 1800s. In the 1960s a modern cantina was constructed and vines were replanted in the Ramitello area.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2012 vintage)

"The 2012 Aglianico del Molise Riserva Contado shows a savory and spicy character that sets this wine apart from other Aglianico-based wines in Campania and Puglia. This expression seems to have more nerve and energy with grilled herb, licorice, black tar and ripe blackberry fruit. The tannins are well managed and the wine offers lots of grip and intensity in the mouth. One thing this wine has is tons of bright personality. It also represents excellent value...Of all the wineries in Molise, none stands taller than Di Majo Norante in terms of international visibility. Celebrated enologist Riccardo Cotarella helped to grow this brand thanks to his sophisticated and international style of winemaking. Molise wines owe much to this dynamic Alessio Di Majo and Riccardo Cotarella team. Today, the winery continues in that path to excellence and is an especially interesting option for those looking for exciting value wines from southern Italy." Drink 2015 - 2020

Wine Enthusiast (2012 vintage)

"Subdued aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, espresso and tobacco lead the nose while the soft, dense palate offers fleshy black cherry, blackberry extract, coffee and a hint of ground cooking spice. It’s ripe and ready so enjoy soon."
