A premium Gimblett Gravels Syrah from a legendary vintage. Kidnapper Cliffs represents the top fruit selections from Te Awa, and this extraordinary bottling was sourced from tiny crops off the dry stones of their best Gimblett Gravels sites. With the ample ripeness of this magnificent year, the 2013 Kidnappers Cliff is a rich form of the classic style, that can be enjoyed now or cellared for a considerable time. As we move toward the shakier vintages of recent years, this is a great chance to grasp and keep hold of Hawkes Bay at its best.

Its Origins

Kidnapper cliffs is the top label from the highly recognised Hawkes Bay winery, Te Awa. "It has been a waiting game to see how Te Awa would emerge from the Villa Maria Estates chrysalis since it was purchased late in 2012. I’ve made discreet enquiries with the Villa Maria folk and Ant Mackenzie about the progress and re-emergence of this fine Hawke’s Bay brand, and the feelings have been positive all round. No doubt there has been considerable soul-searching to ensure that the individuality of ‘Te Awa’ and its associated brands of ‘Left Field’ and ‘Kidnapper Cliffs’ would be maintained, especially in the light of the Villa Maria Estates group already having Hawke’s Bay presences in the form of Vidal Estate, Esk Valley and wines under Thornbury and Villa Maria itself." What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Impressively dense, powerful syrah with plum, dark berry, dark chocolate, mocha and black pepper flavours. Sweet fruit is nicely restrained by ripe tannins that suggest good cellaring potential. 10/10/2017." Drink 2017 - 2023

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"From an exceptional vintage, this Gimblett Gravels syrah is packed with black/blueberry, dark plum, violet, olive and toasted nut aromas with nuances of game and black pepper notes. The palate delivers outstanding concentration and fruit purity, brilliant enhanced by velvety texture and sumptuous flavours. The wine is plush and opulent, yet firmly structured and impeccably balanced. At its best: 2019 to 2028. $70.00. www.teawacollection.com. June 2017." Drink 2019 - 2028

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"From Te Awa, the 2013 vintage (5*), released in 2017, is a classy, youthful red, estate-grown, hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads (35 per cent new). Deeply coloured, with a highly fragrant bouquet, it is mouthfilling, with deep, ripe plum, spice and black-pepper flavours, fine-grained tannins and excellent complexity. Still unfolding, it's a savoury, very harmonious and age-worthy red; best drinking 2019+."
