A superb, elegant Pinot Noir from Marlborough master Hans Herzog. The fruit here is defined and concentrated but nicely tempered, with a perfect balance and fine structure making it a wine that doesn't 'shout' but speaks in a European accent. Herzog's mastery of so many varieties is one of the marvels of New Zealand wine, as he somehow maintains across his range an eminently refined and sophisticated style. A few years already behind it, this is perfect to drink or cellar further.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

As a varietal specialist, Hans is one of the country’s most respected winemakers with over 40 vintages of winegrowing under his belt. Unfettered by commercial considerations Hans adopts an experimentalist stance, producing highly acclaimed, age worthy wines. True to the adgae: quality over quantity. With meticulous attention to detail, Hans has produced an eclectic array of 29 different grape varieties - from classic grape varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir to rarities including Viognier, Arneis, Gruner Veltliner, Nebbiolo, Zweigelt, Tempranillo and more.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2013 vintage

"The grapes were given four days to cold-soak before a natural wild yeast initiation of the ferment. The wine spent 24 days on skins before being pressed and transferred into 20% new French Allier barriques for malolactic fermentation and further aging for 20 months. Unfined & unfiltered to retain the great flavours. Natural sediments may show. -- Tasting Notes: Visualise walking through a lush Mediteranean herb garden and jumping into ripe berry bushes to get a sense of this tribute to Burgundy’s greatest. With hints of dark chocolate and spicy cloves, this is the perfect blend of sweet and savoury; held together with elegent tannins and fine acidity. A graceful star that will age beautifully over the next 10+ years."

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2011 vintage)

"Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2011 Pinot Noir displays pronounced ripe cherry, black raspberry and blueberry coulis fruit notes with a mint and dried herb undercurrent plus a suggestion of lavender. Medium-bodied and packed with slowly evolving Pinot flavors, it has a great line of fine-grained tannins and just enough freshness to lift the long finish." Drink 2014 - 2017

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2010 vintage)

"Quite a dense, complex and savoury Pinot Noir that is clearly showing some earthy/forest floor bottle development together with cherry, violet and plum fruit flavours. Firmly structured wine that promises to cellar well. 5/9/2014"
