The Pillar Box Shiraz is consistently gorgeous. From the masters at Henry's Drive in Padthaway, this quality-laden wine is packed with plush red and black fruit, with serious body and presence as well as a gamey and savoury element that marks it well above it's price.

Its Origins

Named after the proprietor of the 19th century mail coach service that once ran through their property, Henry’s Drive Vignerons is the wine operation established by New Zealander Kim Longbottom and her late husband Mark. Padthaway is located in the south east of South Australia in the heart of the Limestone Coast Region, a picturesque valley with a diverse range of agriculture, horticulture and viticulture. Padthaway experiences a Mediterranean climate of warm dry summers with cool nights which assist in flavor ripening; winters are reasonably cold and, in a good year, fairly wet. Vineyards were first established in the region in 1963 by some of the founding Australian wine companies, which still source fruit from the region today.

What The Critics Say

18.0/100 Raymond Chan

"Dark, near impenetrable purple-hued black-red colour. This has a smooth and harmonious nose with softly concentrated and deep roms of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit with black plum notes, revealing liquorice and cedary oak elements in the glass. Full-bodied, the flavours of ripe blackberry, boysenberry and plum fruits are harmoniously entwined and smooth flowing. Notes of cedary oak, eucalypt and mint unfold to enrich the palate. The sweet fruit is supported by supple, fine, grainy tannins and enlivened by subtle, background acidity. This has richness and fleshiness, and the wine is underlined by the tannins which carry the flavours to a long, lingering finish. This is a smooth, harmonious, ripe Shiraz with fleshy blackberry, boysenberry and plummy fruit carried by fine, grainy tannins. Match with barbecued and grilled red meat dishes over the next 5-6 years. 100% Shiraz fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in French and American oak. "

93/100 Sam Kim

"Bold and flavoursome, this youthful shiraz is filled with dark fruit, cherry pie, black olive and chocolate flavours. The palate shows excellent fruit richness, without being heavy, and offers rounded mouthfeel and velvety texture. A reliable label offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2022."
