A powerful red from Hawkes Bay red experts, Esk Valley. Rich dark fruits derive from a very special selection of grapes on the famous Terraces -- a steep hillside that gives this new label its name. A great vintage with five years age on it, the fruit power is still present but now balanced with cigar box, leather and earth in a complete and compelling Bordeaux style, but with new world vibrancy and character. Superb stuff to drink now or cellar.

Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec

Its Origins

The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of merlot, cabernet franc and malbec from a top Hawke's Bay vintage and from a steeply terraced vineyard adjacent to the winery. Dense, powerful red with impressively layered flavours suggesting red-fleshed plum, red berries, violet and spice. A classy wine with plenty of potential." Drink 2018 - 2023

19.5+/20 Raymond Chan

"Intense black-red colour, near impenetrable. The bouquet is full and densely packed with ripe black-berried fruits unfolding beautiful aromatics and fragrances. This has florality, along with the dark herbs, freshness, iron-earth notes and balanced pencilly oak. This exudes finesse, with aromatic beauty. On palate, the fruit is extremely rich, the blackberry, blackcurrant and spicy black plums showing vibrancy and vitality. The tannin extraction is very fine and powdery, providing mouthfilling structure to underline the fruit. This has brilliant acid piquancy that provides aromatic lift and enlivens the mouthfeel. The overall result is elegance and liveliness, with aromatic beauty. Underneath, remains plenty of power and drive. This is classical 2013 Hawke’s Bay vintage in expression. A blend of approx. 40% Malbec, 35% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc from ‘The Terraces’ vineyard, the fruit hand-picked and co-fermented in concrete vat, the wine aged approx. 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques. 19.5+/20 Sep 2017 RRP $163.50
