Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec
The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A blend of merlot, cabernet franc and malbec from a top Hawke's Bay vintage and from a steeply terraced vineyard adjacent to the winery. Dense, powerful red with impressively layered flavours suggesting red-fleshed plum, red berries, violet and spice. A classy wine with plenty of potential." Drink 2018 - 2023
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2010 vintage)
"From their famous The Terraces Vineyard, grapes were harvested on a single day and co-fermented in 85-year-old concrete fermenter to express the essence of this famed land. A stunning expression of Bordeaux-style, the wine combines fruit richness with seductive savoury, spicy complexity. Gorgeous aromas of dark fruit, smoked meat, clove, thyme and cigar box with an elegant floral lift on the nose. The palate delivers excellent concentration and weight, enhanced by silky texture and fine, polished tannins. A wonderfully composed wine showing both delectable flavours and engaging characters. At its best: now to 2023. $70.00. www.eskvalley.co.nz. Oct 2016."
