This superb LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port drinks rather like a 15 year old Vintage! For a little more money than basic Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage is a far more concentrated and serious fruit selection, with Vintage-level fruit given extra years pre-aging in oak for rounded, ready flavours. Dow's lead the LBV market with a full bodied style that's powerful and chocolatey yet fresh, carrying sweetness and body to a long, complex and dry finish. Impressive wine.

Its Origins

Owned by the ubiquitous Port family of Symington (solely, since 1961) through many years of growth and mergers. The great house of Dow’s was established in 1798 by Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese wine merchant from Oporto based in London. This savvy businessman was one of the few to ship during the Napoleonic Wars, with his Port ships equipped with guns. The name DOW comes from the merge of Silva’s company with that of another famous Port company, Dow & Co. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families. The heart of the wines of Dow’s are the two quintas (vineyards) of Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora. These are some of the Douro’s finest vineyards, and allow perfect exposure, drainage and growing conditions year round.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Wine Enthusiast

"This wine comes from the original member of the Symington family of companies. The style of the Port, as always with Dow's, is on the dry side, giving structure as well as pure dried fruits and tannins. That suggests this LBV could age. Drink now, but it will better from 2022."

94/100 and Best Buy, Wine and Spirits Magazine, Joshua Greene (2011)

"This offers more immediate pleasures than the vintage Dow's declared in 2011—it comes across as an idealized LBV rather than a baby Vintage. Formidable in its black density and red spice, fragrant with persimmon-like scents and tannins that have the grit of stone-ground chocolate, this is compellingly drinkable and delicious. Stock up for the holidays."

92/100 and Best Value Wine, Natalie Maclean (2011)

"Terrific value for this Portuguese fortified dessert wine from the Douro Valley. Aromas of blackcurrant jam and blackberry pie wrapped in smoke. Pair with holiday fruitcake, chocolate cheesecake or chocolate chip cookies. Port food pairings: blue cheese, nuts, almond torte, chocolate."
