An icon of complex Kiwi Sav that's more like a top French Sancerre. Dog Point are from the early Cloudy Bay orbit, so this oak-age style is similar to by Cloudy's Te Koko though it has zero new oak and malolactic creaminess, making it an extremely fine, intense and complex white. The best of new and old world Sauvignon in one bottle. Enjoy with food.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"This oak fermented and matured Sauvignon Blanc has a cult following. It's Sauvignon Jim, but not as we know it! The oak is evident but reasonably subtle, allowing fruit, mineral, citrus and nutty lees character to take centre-stage. It contributes to the wine's rich and creamy texture. A complex wine with a beautifully restrained reductive character 03 JUN 2015." Drink 2015 - 2022

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex, developing bouquet with aromas of preserved lemon and quince, peaches and apples, a core of stony minerality, layers of lees spice and a completeness. Equally complex on the palate, calm and confident, balanced and still fresh. Flavours reflect the nose with preserved citrus, apple and stone fruit highlights. The lees and acidity along with barrel ageing give this wine a fresh silky texture and lengthy detailed finish Balanced and ready, complex and long." Drink 2019 - 2024+

18/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding MW

"Super-reductive aroma that is struck flint and charry oak but also do to with the origin, not just winemaking style, I believe. Underneath all the struck match is intense greengage fruit and bitter orange. Deep, long and intense with fabulous herbal/citrus purity. Stunning and so much ageing potential. Reverberant and endless. This may be an alternative style of NZ Sauvignon that you need to grow into but for me it is absolutely one of the best and most exciting wines made in Marlborough. (JH)." Drink 2016 - 2023
