So cheap for a Bragato Trophy-winner! It scooped Pure Gold and 'Champion Other Red' Trophy in Bragato 2016. But this is more sophisticated than the usual show-stopper. Serious dark fruit depth is delivered in a medium body and a nice "silken-textured" elegance. Satisfying yet expertly made as a fine wine with dinner, the St John Malbec is proper wine and a steal at this special low price. The 2013 vintage in Hawkes Bay allowed Malbec to fully ripen and show its true potential - brilliant.

Its Origins

Founded in 1980 by Andrew and Cynthia Hendry when the New Zealand wine industry was small and relatively unknown, Coopers Creek Vineyard has grown and matured over three decades into a top class winery with a strong international presence. It continues to innovate, particularly with new wine styles, introducing and pioneering promising new grape varieties that are ideal for cool climate regions. Viognier, Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Marsanne and Montepulciano are new varieties for New Zealand, but heading for stardom. Coopers Creek is satisfying a growing demand for these stylish varieties in addition to its longstanding pedigree with Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux reds.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It is elegantly restrained on the nose yet the wine offers full richness on the palate, displaying dark fruit, roasted meat and mixed spice characters with a touch of floral lift. The palate offers bags of tasty flavours, brilliantly structured by fine, firm tannins. A lovely drink already. At its best: now to 2022. $29.00. www.cooperscreek.co.nz. June 2015." Drink 2015 - 2022

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Sweet, almost succulent dark berry and plum flavours, with an appealingly spicy finish. I’m not normally a huge fan of Kiwi Malbec, but a warm year like 2013 has produced some great examples. This silken-textured wine is elegant and approachable. Hard to imagine it getting much better. 20/6/2015." Drink 2015 - 2018

4 Stars Michael Cooper

"The 2013 vintage (4*) was matured for a year in seasoned oak barrels. It's a dark, fragrant red with sweet, 'coconut' aromas and very good depth of vibrant plum/spice flavours." Drink 2016 - 2020
