53% Malbec, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet, 8% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot
Never slow off the mark, legendary French consultant Michel Rolland spotted Argentina coming a mile off. Way back in 1998 he and Pomerol winegrower Jean-Michel Arcaute secured a prime spot in Menzoda’s Uco Valley, up 1,100 metres in the cool semi-desert plains under the snow-capped Andes. Rolland was soon joined on this Vista Flores property by seven other Bordeaux-based investors, and four different bodegas were built to house the various interests. While each bodega produces their own labels, the Clos de Los Siete (or ‘Garden of the Seven’) is made by Rolland but represents their shared vision and is sourced from a joint vineyard of varied crop - with some Bordeaux varietals and Syrah but dominated by the Argentinian star grape, Malbec. As a wine the Clos perfectly reflects its origins and story: the brightness and aromatic definition of alpine Malbec is balanced against the denser, more complex spine provided by ‘noble’ French varietals, while this perfectly rounded package is delivered in Rolland’s famously defined, harmonious and seamless style.
What The Critics Say
91/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
"Bright medium ruby. Aromas of burnished oak, currant, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate. Plush flavors of dark berries and spices spread out to saturate the palate. Offers lovely breadth and sweetness of fruit for a red wine in this price range. Tannins are sweet and seamless. This is already tasty but will keep." (Drink 2016 - 2021)
Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez (2012 vintage)
"The 2012 Clos de los Siete, a blend of 50% Malbec, and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is a complex blend of wines contributed by all wineries in 2012, except for Flechas de los Andes. It has some restrained notes with plenty of spices and ripe black fruit a little blurry. The palate is medium-bodied, with sleek tannins, moderate acidity and length. The different vintages are quite similar, maintaining a very high level, but today I’d give the edge to the 2011. 960,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2014-2020."
