One of the great names of Montalcino, with beautiful fruit clarity and complexity. Canalicchio di Sopra create some of the most profound wines of this region, with serious structure and tannins amongst a compelling brightness and nuanced expression of red fruits and spice. Typical and yet better than competitors, this is truly a premium choice in Brunello.

Its Origins

Founded in the sixties by Primo Pacenti, Canalicchio di Sopra remains family-owned. Its establishment represented a substantive risk, as Pacenti, a peasant farmer up until the abolition of the sharecropping system, possessed little in the way of security. The Brunellos of the estate largely reflect the wine’s historical paradigm, a character derived, in part, through 36 months of cask aging, and 1 year in bottle. The northern zone, the area relative to Canalicchio, evidences a cooler climate than that of its southern counterpart; this northern terrain receives limited exposure to both the Mediterranean influence of Montalcino and the cooling breezes that the latter’s high altitude affords, resulting in wines that display impressive ripeness and structure.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"Canalicchio di Sopra's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and firm at its core, with qualities that bode very well for its aging potential. That compact core is surrounded by many thick layers of dark fruit and spice that are expressive and expansive. Those outer layers give the wine softness and some immediate accessibility, even at this early stage in its life. All summed up, this is a very complete and characteristic Brunello that offers stunning quality for medium or long-term drinking." Drink 2020 - 2035

93/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Forest floor, dark-skinned berry, iris and new leather aromas lead the nose. The full-bodied juicy palate offers ripe wild cherry, star anise and a hint of pipe tobacco alongside taut, fine-grained tannins." Drink 2023 - 2030

95/100 Wine Spectator, Bruce Anderson (2012 vintage)

"Loads of balsamic aromas and flavours - juniper, rosemary, thyme, olive - along with cherry, sanguine and tobacco notes are the hallmarks of this intense red. Well-integrated and complex, building to a long aftertaste. Best from 2021 to 2035. 3,400 cases made."
