This Tempranillo from Callejo is a beautiful example - elegant and complex...rather like a great Music. Callejo care so much about their wine they play music in the barrel halls! Despite full body and fruit richness there is wonderful aromatic brightness, lift and nuance - an appetising, satisfying balancing act that Callejo are getting famous for.

Its Origins

The Felix Callejo family has been growing grapes for 4 generations with little changes. Organic grapes are still carefully tended, selected and handpicked. The family owns 60 hectares in Sotillo de la Ribera, the very heart of Ribera del Duero, planted with some of the best vines in the region. The age of the vines range from 25 to 60 years. Yields are limited naturally by the hard continental climate and a poor soil of low fertility. On top of that Jose Felix, the winemaker does an strict green pruning and selection, an average of only 8 bunches are allowed per plant.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"Intense sight cherry color, with an edging of cardinal tones. The nose is very aromatic, primary, with notes of wild red and black fruit, rosemary, lilac, scrubland, oregano, cinnamon, confectionery notes. The palate is complex and structured, highly integrated wood step fruity, black plum and blueberry, smoked fine, mineral character with a lingering finish."

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez (2012 vintage)

"The 2012 Callejo Crianza is pure Tempranillo from the village of Sotillo de la Ribera, aged for one year in French barrels. Dark-colored and ripe with a nose of plums, black cherries and fine spices, the oak is nicely integrated in the wine. The palate is full-bodied with very good density, ripeness, round tannins and a remarkable finish. 100,000 bottles produced."

91/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2011 vintage)

"(aged for a year in French oak): Opaque ruby. Pungent aromas of dark berries, mocha, licorice and peppery spices, with a smoky nuance building in the glass. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cracked pepper flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. Finishes supple and spicy, with gentle framing tannins that fade slowly into the wine's fruit."
