This fine and complex Waipara Sauvignon perfectly balances nature and winemaking. Waipara's old vines and mineral rich soils produce ripe fruit with enormous depth and subtlety which is hand pressed direct to seasoned French oak for 8-10 months. The result is a perfectly integrated play of tropical, flinty, slatey and citrus notes: a new, very stylish and serious statement in ageworthy and oaked Sauvignon. Try this!

Its Origins

Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and it’s offerings.

What The Critics Say

18/20 Raymond Chan

"Two parcels of fruit vinified separately, hand-picked, WBP and high solids fermented in barrel to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 8-10 months on lees with some batonnage, with no MLF. Bright, even straw-yellow colour with light gold at the core, lighter on rim. The nose is elegant and tightly concentrated with aromas of greengages, nectarines and herbs with spicy and nutty barrel-ferment nuances, minerals and hints of smoke. A saline component adds interest to the aromatics. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours of green stonefruits, herbs and spicy oak form a tight and intensely concentrated core with a firm line. Elevated acidity lends brightness and energy to the mouthfeel, providing bite and drive. The palate carries through to a concentrated, lingering finish with stonefruits and bitter herb nuances. This is a very tight and concentrated oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc with intensity and cut. Serve with herb-marinated seafood, poultry and white meat dishes over the next 3-4 years. 18.0-/20 Nov 2014 RRP $30.00"

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The debut 2013 vintage is from the winery formerly called Waipara West. A classy, distinctive wine, it was hand-picked at Waipara, partly barrel-fermented and lees-aged for eight months. Pale lemon/green, it's reminiscent of a white Bordeaux, with substantial body and concentrated, ripe, tropical fruit flavours, showing excellent complexity, harmony and length. A subtle wine, it is still youthful; drink now or cellar."
