Full of Southern French power, this is a Grand Vin is from an ancient estate on the Terraces de Larzac, recently acquired by Gerard Bertrand. This sub-appellation earmarked for promotion is a unique terroir of Larzac that enjoys good elevation (300m+ on the Massif Central). Here Spring and Autumn rains moderate the heat and moisten the sub-soil, which is rich in clay and bauxite, aiding the vines through the dry summer while supplying them with rich minerals. Each plot was vinified separately and oak-aged for 12 months before careful blending. Serious stuff from the south.

Its Origins

Wine Enthusiast named his winery Europe’s best in 2011, but Gerard Bertrand began as a rugby player representing France and Narbonne. It wasn’t until the early death of his father that he returned to take the reigns of the family operation, Domaine de Villemajou in Boutenac, Corbieres. He soon identified the potential of the Languedoc-Roussillon to produce rich yet bright, modern wines suited to world market trends and from there began acquiring labels and properties across the region. Balancing an organic and increasingly biodynamic viticulture with an evangelical zeal for exporting his Mediterranean ‘Art de Vivre’, Gerard Bertrand has quickly become one of the most important champions of that which epitomises Southern French wine of today: superb quality in quantity.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2013 Chateau la Sauvageonne Terrasses du Larzac Grand Vin offers a beautifully fruited, ripe, sexy, medium to full-bodied style to go with lots of cassis, blackberry, licorice, roasted herbs and hints of tar. Made from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan, it’s made in a ripe, forward style and is a great drink -- Former rugby player Gerard Bertrand makes a bevy of high quality wines from throughout the Languedoc. All of his wines have well-made, textured, ripe profiles that are always a joy to drink." Drink 2015 - 2021

Jancis Robinson (2011 vintage)

"The newest estate in their portfolio. Mostly Grenache, with some Syrah. Amazing fruit character. It’s a real onslaught of fruit flavour. Soft, pliable tannins and a slight bitterness on the finish, but the overall impression is of eucalypt and menthol."

Parker's Wine Advocate

"Gerard Bertrand makes a bevy of high-class wines from throughout the Languedoc and Roussillon. The wines emphasize fruit and texture, with a modern edge, yet they are never over the top and are always well-made and enjoyable."
