Spectacular! This exceptional wine was made to sell at much, much higher pricing (think Valli, Neudorf Moutere, Amisfield) and comes with a 95/100 from Sam Kim! Bob Campbell gave it the same last vintage, while in a recent Pinot Tasting it scored in the Top 10 against other wine heavyweights (this result is embargoed, so no details...). This Marlborough winery was recently acquired so old vintages are being liquidated for nothing like their value. As the top wine this was aged in expensive new French oak, with fruit selected from the very best rows in their single vineyard. Bright berry fruit is grounded in a serious mineral and earthy core – i.e. it's complex, not a fruit bomb – with the fine acid and tannins of a seriously expensive Pinot to cellar. Which it has...after four years this is drinking superbly but will age further. Stocks will run out – buy now!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

In their own words: "As if New Zealand wasn’t already on the edge of the earth, wait until you’ve made the journey to Wairau Valley, Marlborough. At 41.51S 174.01E, we’re literally on the edge of the world. Wedged between rugged mountains on both sides and with two icy rivers cutting a track through, it’s an extreme place. This valley is the definition of raw, untamed, cool climate. In fact, our winemaking and viticulture teams wouldn’t have it any other way. They live to embrace challenge – creating intensely flavoured wines that amplify Marlborough’s remarkable natural story. These strikingly different, complex wines illustrate our ‘Ara’ or path on the edge of the world." Ara Wines

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Elegant, stylish and complex, this engaging pinot shows dark berry, smoked game, truffle, cedar and vanilla characters with subtle dried herb undertones. The palate is concentrated and intense, yet refined and poised, delivering multi-layered mouthfeel and terrific savoury complexity, wonderfully framed by polished tannins. $50.00. At its best: now to 2019. www.arawines.co.nz. Feb 2017."

95/100 and "Gold Ribbon" Bob Campbell MW (2012 vintage)

"This flagship wine is made from a selection of grapes harvested from a few of the fines rows of vines on ARA’s property. It’s a dense, supple Pinot Noir with raspberry, cherry, plum and subtle fresh herb flavours plus a seasoning of spicy oak. Accessible now but with a structure that suggests good cellaring potential."

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper (2012 vintage)

"The 2012 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown in the lower Waihopai Valley, hand-picked and matured in French oak casks (partly new). Deep and youthful in colour, it is graceful and finely poised, with strong cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, silky-textured and long. Well worth cellaring, it should be at its best 2016+."
