A seriously superb modern Rioja, owned by legends La Rioja Alta. These old-school producers purchased this estate in the neighbouring sub-region of Rioja Alavesa. The Martelo Riserva is only made in special vintages that capture the benefits of the long, slow ripening so prized in this elevated terroir. Sourced in local sites that enhance these characteristics, this less heavily oak-influenced style is modern and terroir-driven, with lush fruit and umami nuances emerging mainly from sheer, inherent fruit purity. Superb and unique, the Martelo is a wine to experience.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Anorak, Jamie Goode

"Primarily Tempranillo with malolactic in barrel, where the wine stays for 2 years in a mix of French (20%) and American (80%) oak. Refined and supple, this is a wine that combines sweet berry and cherry fruits with some complex spice, earth and cedar notes, as well as a hint of tar. There’s a lovely concentration of fruit and just a twist of vanilla from the American oak, but this stays nicely in the background. This is a modern Rioja, but it’s not about bold, sweet fruit: instead, there’s a level of elegance and refinement here, and this wine will age into a beautiful mellow maturity over the course of the next decade. It has all the ingredients to become a polished, classic, mature Rioja."

94/100 Wine-Pages.com, Tom Cavannan

"Torre de Oña is a winery created by parent company La Rioja Alta in the 1990s, to make very high quality wines in the neighbouring Rioja region of Alavesa. This is the first release of Martelo, and the first time winemaker Julio Sáenz felt the vintage merited this special selection of the best grapes from old vine plots, aged 24 months in new American oak (80%) and French oak (20%) barrels. It's an immediately modern, plush, yet svelte and concentrated wine, graphite and ebony-dark aromas driven by intense fruit wrapped in very fine oak. The palate has wonderful intensity too, the fruit cool and pure, nothing overblown, everything stylish and serious, spices and balsamic richness to the tannins and fruit, very good acidity, and a long finish playing fruit against structure. There are components of Mazuelo, Garnacha and even the white wine grape Viura alongside the bedrock Tempranillo, in a terrific wine."

"Mid garnet. Correct, fully expressive savoury rioja with no excess oak and just starting to drink well. Gamey, but also fresh with good definition and structure. Very complete, Well done! 60 year-old vines. 95% Tempranillo and 5% a traditional field blend of Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura. 24 months in oak, 80% American and 20% French." Drink 2016 - 2025
