A supremely delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from a Sonoma specialist in single site, high-altitude wine. Among Stonetreet's staggering collection of 200+ individual parcels the Rockfall Vineyard is one of the highest, located above the fog at 600 to 670 metres on the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains, between Sonoma and Napa. With the benefit of superb soils and huge hang time, which ply the wine with layer upon layer of plush fruit and terroir complexity, this is insanely delicious and impressive now but will age for decades to come. The 2012 vintage for North Coast Cabernet was one of the best ever, rated 96/100 and "extraordinay" by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Limited stock and super-rare in New Zealand -- collect!

Its Origins

Stonestreet is part of the Jackson Family portfolio of estates. Stonestreet Estate Vineyards stands as one of the most extensive mountain estates in the world and is a testament to the quality of high-elevation winegrowing in California. Here one finds a collection of distinctive single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs — wines carved from an extreme landscape. Planted high atop Black Mountain, the vineyards are located in the eastern portion of the Alexander Valley AVA. Climbing from 400 to 2,400 feet above sea level, Stonestreet Estate is a patchwork of peaks, valleys and ridges defined by high elevations, volcanic soils and cool maritime breezes. From top to bottom, the property possesses more than 20 soil types and 20 temperature zones. To ensure the utmost quality and authenticity, the estate is divided into 235 separate vineyard blocks and sub-blocks. Each section has its own specific rootstocks, varieties, clones and viticultural protocols matched to the complexities of the terrain. From these divergent terroirs, winemaker Lisa Valtenbergs crafts site-specific single vineyard wines each harvest. Additionally, the Stonestreet portfolio showcases the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the Estate Chardonnay and the Estate Sauvignon Blanc — a collection of expressive cuvees emanating from the most highly prized vineyard blocks on the mountain during a given vintage.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Robert Parker

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall Vineyard, which sees 57% new French oak for 20 months, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with a deep, opaque purple color and notes of charcoal, créme de cassis, graphite and white chocolate. It is full-bodied, multilayered, very deep, impressive and long. -- Stonestreet continues to build wines that show less emphasis on toasty new oak and more emphasis on vineyard site, fruit quality, and overall harmony and elegance. They make two Sauvignon Blancs, seven Chardonnays and five Cabernet Sauvignons, all from the Alexander Valley high-elevation hillside vineyards of the Jackson family." Drink 2015 - 2040

94+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Graphite, smoke, tobacco, new leather, licorice and gravel are some of the signatures in Stonestreet's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall. The most savory and mineral of these Cabernets, the Rockfall is also arguably the wine that captures the greatest amount of site specificity. The firm tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit, but they are there. In this vintage though, the contours are a bit softened, which does have the benefit of making the wine more accessible early, but at some expense of vineyard nuance." Drink 2017 - 2032
