Another great discount on this beautiful Riesling from Riverby Estate's old vines. This under-the-radar wine is an insider's icon, being the fruit of some of Marlborough's oldest vines set among the now-famous vineyards at the region's heart. The superb 2012 vintage is notably delicate (rather like the 2009), with age having given it a subtle oiliness of texture and aroma to round out the florals and fruit that, thanks to this vine age, are so deep, gentle and restrained. Smack bang in the middle of it's expected age range -- though nicely on the developed side, for thus who love that -- this classy wine was already cheap at RRP. At this crazy price is is a steal!

Overview

Grape

Riesling

Its Origins

A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Sam Kim

"It's dry yet the wine is full of juicy, delicious flavours. The elegantly perfumed bouquet shows lemon/lime, white peach, floral and flinty notes. It's taut and linear on the palate with excellent concentration and length. A delightful dry riesling. At its best: 2014 to 2022. $21.00. 10.5%. Screw cap. June 2013." (Tasted 2013) Drink 2014 - 2022

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is very delicate and soft, very finely presented with purity. The aromas gently bloom to show citrus blossom, white florals, minerals with a touch of minerals. Dry to taste and tightly bound, the delicate fruit flavours form a fine core with excellent drive and line. The mouthfeel is soft with tight, fine-grained textures, near austere and bitter with its concentration. The phenolics are extremely fine with the acidity in the background. This has delicacy and detail, and the flavours and textures are carried to a very dry, soft white floral finish that is sustained and lingering. Serve as an aperitif or with subtle seafood over the next 6-8+ years. Hand-picked fruit from 22 y.o. vines with no botrytis, fermented to 10.7% alc. and 3.3 g/L rs, TA 7.7 g/L and pH 3.13. 18.5/20." (Tasted 2013) Drink 2013 - 2020

Michael Cooper

"The 2012 vintage is a youthful wine, made in a dry style (3.3 grams/litre of residual sugar). Medium-bodied, with ripe, lemony, appley flavours, hints of marmalade and spice, and good harmony and length, it's a satisfying 'food' wine." (tasted for 2015 edition)
