Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere.The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

"Typically a very classy Nelson red. It is hand-picked at Upper Moutere, in the Neudorf Home Vineyard, and the tiny Pomona Vineyard, where the AM 10/5 vines are over 20 years old. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured for 10 to 12 months in French oak barriques (29 per cent new in 2012), and is usually bottled without fining or filtering. The 2012 (5*) is deep and youthful in colour, mouthfilling and very savoury, with dense, ripe plum and spice flavours, hints of herbs, olives and nuts, excellent complexity, and the structure to age; open 2015+."

Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on edge. The nose is elegantly refined with tightly bound aromas of beautifully detailed dark red berry and black cherry fruits, revealing subtle dark herb, black and violet florals and minerally notes from the concentrated core. Medium-full bodied, the palate is still tightly held, but showing beautifully succulent and sweetly ripe black fruits and minerally notes and complexing herb and earthy detail. The tannin extraction is very fine, and provides a seamlessly integrated framework underlining the fruit. The mouthfeel is poised with discreet acidity enhancing the vitality of the flavours. Beautifully balanced, the palate has great linearity, carrying the flavours to a very long and sustained finish. This is a beautifully refined and seamlessly concentrated Pinot Noir with black fruits and minerally complexity. It has the structure to develop over the next 8-10 years. Serve with lamb, beef, venison and hard cheeses. Hand-picked fruit, clones 5, 10/5, 667, 777, 113 and Abel from the Neudorf ‘Home’ block and the ‘Pomona’ vineyard, from vines 15 – 33 y.o., fully destemmed and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 23% new French oak, then given a further 4 months on lees in tank. 614 cases made. 19.0+/20
