A gorgeous red of incredible value, this dark-fruited Tuscan version of a Bordeaux Cabernet blend is juicy and charming but full of depth and sophistication. A baby Super Tuscan and effectively 'unclassified' - with neither famous brand nor 'Chianti' on the label - this is wildly under-priced for the beautiful, quite serious and boutique thing that it is. A very, very popular product - don't dally!

Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet and Merlot

Its Origins

Tenuta Monteti is a heart-felt but state-of-the-art producer based in southern Maremma, Tuscany, where shelter from coastal winds is provided by the eponymous Monteti peak. After growing up in Lombard vineyards, the somewhat lyrical figure of Paolo Baratta and his wife Gemma finally found a spot for their own estate in 1999, now joined by daughter Eva and her husband Javier Pedrazzini. Like many producers in ‘Super Tuscan’ Maremma the estate is planted in French varieties, in this case Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Alicante Bouschet and Merlot. Using near-organic principles in the vines, the winery too is low-intervention with indigenous yeast fermentation serviced by a high-tech, gravity-fed system into a large underground cellar. Here each parcel of each variety is vinified and aged separately, allowing the fullest possible palette for blending their two distinctive and increasingly renowned estate wines, the Caburnio and it’s big brother Monteti

What The Critics Say

92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2011 vintage)

"Supple and structured, this delicious red offers scents of Mediterranean scrub, mint, blue flowers and ripe berries. Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 20% Alicante, the juicy palate delivers Morello cherry, cassis, mocha and wild aromatic herb notes. Supple tannins carry the savory flavors. Enjoy through 2016."

89/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2011 vintage)

"The 2011 Caburnio offers an unusual level of freshness and vibrancy for the year. A wine of aromatic lift and finesse, the Caburnio graces the palate with a bevy of sweet floral notes, silky tannins, red berry fruit and cinnamon. Drink this perfumed gracious Maremma red over the next few years. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Alicante-Bouschet, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot."

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW (2011 vintage)

"Already with some attractive evolution on the nose. Full and ripe but with sufficient structure and acidity. Full of character. Exciting. VGV"
