First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.
What The Critics Say
90+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Produced in 100% new French oak Puncheons and using 60% whole cluster fermentation, the 2012 Kulta Syrah has a deep garnet color and well defined black fruit notes on the nose – crushed blackberries and black cherries - with a hint of blueberries plus nuances of cloves, anise and sage. Medium to full-bodied with great concentration and a crisp acid line, it has medium to firm chewy tannins (a little astringent) and a long finish." Drink 2014 - 2020
Winemaker notes on current vintage
Made in the style of the great wines of the Northern Rhone, this Kulta Syrah 2012 pays tribute to the style. Finesse and complexity of character that typifies the old world style of winemaking. From the beginning it is attention grabbing with scents of lively red fruits, spice box, earth, violets and garrigue with touches of wet earth and bacon fat. On the palate, the wine is concentrated with more of the red fruits and hints of olive tapenade with earthy tannins tending to the meat derived characters. Finishing dense yet lively and fresh this Kulta Syrah is destined to be a modern classic.
