The husband-and-wife team of Eric Bonnet and Julia Moro (who run the winery) are part of a dynamic group of young winemakers whose wines are challenging the famous names of the region in quality, if not, thankfully, in price. Located in the commune of Courthézon along the eastern border of the Châteauneuf du Pape AOC, the nearly 26-acre vineyard was founded by Eric’s parents, Gérard and Marie-Claude Bonnet, in 1976. Julia says of their approach: “Old-fashioned Chãteauneuf is very gamey, very heavy. We prefer freshness, elegance, minerality.” The estate is in conversion to organic farming and will be certified in 2014. Organically grown grapes.
What The Critics Say
92-95/100 Robert Parker
"Possibly even better, with a voluptuous, hedonistic slant, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Secrets de Pignan is a blend of 100% Grenache that comes all from the sandy soils of the Pignan lieu-dit. Beautifully fruited and textured, with plenty of dark berry fruit, crushed flowers, violets and sweet spice, this full-bodied, sexy 2012 has a rich, layered feel, low acidity and sweet tannin. It should be approachable on release and dish out plenty of pleasure through 2022 or beyond."
93-95/100 Stephen Tanzer
"Inky ruby. Ripe black and blue fruits on the deeply pitched smoke- and spice-accented nose. Broad and fleshy, offering sweet, palate-staining blueberry and cassis flavors and a hint of candied licorice. Delivers a serious wallop of intense dark berry character on the relentless, incisive finish, which is firmed by smooth, harmonious tannins."
