A star of the Faiveley range, and with 2012 being a concentrated vintage this Les Cazetiers certainly delivers. Nearby and at a similar mid-slope elevation to Le Chambertin itself, Le Cazetiers is one of the town's two top Premier Crus - along with it's neighbour Clos Saint-Jacques - but Cazetiers is the more silky and open, delivering the profound fruit and earthy intensity with a finesse and roundness that makes it approachable younger. Even more so in 2012, when 50% crop loss made concentration very high and tannins ripe and soft. Such an inexpensive look at Chambertin's famous depth and power, this wine is a steal. Collect!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Domaine Faiveley is one of the biggest domaines (115ha) in Burgundy and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by the first François, Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, François who has recently retired and now his son Erwan, born in 1979. The change of generation, enhanced by the arrival of Bernard Hervet as Managing Director, is clear warning of the intention to dynamise the business. Already there has been a notable expansion of vineyards under Faiveley’s control. Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best. Their concentration and richness are rarely equalled.

What The Critics Say

92-94/100 Allen Meadows (Burghound)

"An agreeably fresh if restrained dark berry fruit nose of newly turned earth and sauvage notes leads to strikingly intense, powerful and concentrated medium-weight flavors that are built on a pungent minerality, all wrapped in a complex, explosively long, balanced and driving finish. This is a dazzlingly good effort though note well that it is expressly built to age and it will need plenty of it."

93/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, woodsmoke and flowers complemented by sexy oak tones. Supple and velvety, with inviting flavors of strawberry, raspberry, game and earth supported by smoky minerality. At once juicy and harmonious, finishing with sweet red fruits."

Jasper Morris MW

"This wine is a rich, concentrated purple, with a touch of perfume from marriage of wood and ripe fruit. This is grand vin: succulent up front before it finishes on a saline mineral quality, with very good tension."
