A unique Barolo of deep tradition and immense appeal. The Vigna Elena is top of the Cogno range, with a real family focus. It is decorated by a childhood picture by daughter Elena, and is crafted like the wines oftheir "grandfathers". The Nebbiolo "Rose" clone is cultivated within this meticulous tradition, fermented indigenously and aged in large format oak, retaining an "expressive" tannin profile. Superb delicacy and complexity in a more inward and backward style, but with such depth that it can be "a wine to wallow in" (JancisRobinson.com). Top stuff -- collect!

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

95+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Cogno's 2012 Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena is one of the finer wines of this generally uneven vintage. Ethereal and gracious, the Vigna Elena is deceptive in its structure and overall feel, and yet it has so much to say. The spice, rose petal, orange zest and bright red cherry fruit are all finely etched. A few years in bottle will help the tannins soften." Drink 2022 - 2032

95/100 James Suckling

"Extremely perfumed and fresh with roses, lilac, cherries and hist of strawberries. Medium bodied, bright acidity and tangy lively finish. Drink now or hold. But its so good to drink now."

17.5++/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Lustrous mid ruby with a narrow, orange rim. Pretty much similar to Bricco Pernice, but more brooding and with enormous concentration of ripe, sweet-sour cherry. With aeration, it increases noticeably in depth. A wine to wallow in. Compact and backward with succulent red fruit underneath. Very tight finish with bags of polished tannins. Not nearly ready. Taut, yet powerful. 100% Rosè. Released two years after the other Elvio Cogno Barolos. (WS) " Drink 2020 - 2030
