Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, owner and winemaker of Artadi, is recognised as one of the greatest names in the business in Spain. The winery was once a co-operative of 13 growers who owned well-sited vineyards around the town of Laguardia in the Alavesa wine region of Rioja. Juan Carlos saw the potential of these wonderful vineyards and purchased the Bodega, immediately amending the philosophy and style of winemaking. The winemaking is modern with an emphasis upon fruit driven wines, characterised by the terroir of individual vineyard sites – a far cry from the philosophy of traditional Rioja producers. French oak is used, not American, allowing the principle variety, Tempranillo, eloquent natural expression.
What The Critics Say
92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Guttierez
"The 2012 Valdeginés is a very fresh, single-vineyard Tempranillo that always has plenty of licorice and even aniseed aromas. As they do with all the single-vineyard wines, Valdeginñes is also fermented in oak vats and matured in French oak barriques. This is a cool vineyard that produces fresh wines, perhaps more Atlantic than those from 2011. It has a fine texture, good acidity and is a happy wine. It doesn't have the strict minerality found in other vineyards like Carretil; here the fruit is more upfront. There is no need to wait but time will bring extra complexity. 12,000 bottles produced. 2012 seems to be e very good vintage for Artadi, ripe and powerful, but with very well-integrated oak, serious wines. Drink 2015 - 2022."

"Hailing from a hot, dry year, this single-vineyard Rioja smells grapy and like cassis and fresh herbs. In the mouth, it’s loud on the attack but doesn’t sport the structure of previous vintages. Short black-fruit flavors pick up complexity and depth with airing. Drink through 2022. — M.S. (12/1/2015)"
