Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, owner and winemaker of Artadi, is recognised as one of the greatest names in the business in Spain. The winery was once a co-operative of 13 growers who owned well-sited vineyards around the town of Laguardia in the Alavesa wine region of Rioja. Juan Carlos saw the potential of these wonderful vineyards and purchased the Bodega, immediately amending the philosophy and style of winemaking. The winemaking is modern with an emphasis upon fruit driven wines, characterised by the terroir of individual vineyard sites – a far cry from the philosophy of traditional Rioja producers. French oak is used, not American, allowing the principle variety, Tempranillo, eloquent natural expression.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Luis Guttierez
"Produced with the Temporanillo grapes sourced from a myriad of small plots planted with old vines (hence its name), a little bit of the blend of three plots (Valdeginés, La Poza de Ballesteros and El Carretil), the 2012 Pagos Viejos shows a fine thread of acidity, but here I get more notes from the barrel in the nose. Then the palate is the one with rounder tannins, it feels very gentle and well educated. It has good volume and silkiness, A noteworthy Pagos Viejos. 20,000 bottles were produced...2012 seems to be e very good vintage for Artadi, ripe and powerful, but with very well-integrated oak, serious wines. Drink 2016 - 2023."
94/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2010 vintage)
"(all tempranillo): Inky ruby. A complex, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, smoky Indian spices, vanilla and pipe tobacco. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering black raspberry, cherry-cola and spicecake flavors and a jolt of tangy acidity. This fleshy, vibrant wine finishes with strong energy, supple tannins and superb persistence."
