A cool discount on the pre-aged, premium Argentian red. The Orellana is one of three labels in Trapiche's single-vineyard "Terroir Series". This level sits very close to the pinnacle of the depth, complexity and refinement that can be found in this rich, traditional style of Mendoza Malbec. Ripe and delicious tannins hold up a massive frame of black fruit and toasty chocolate flavours. Aged to perfection and exceptional value at this price -- don't wait for stocks to go!

Its Origins

Trapiche is one of the oldest brands still produced in Argentina. It used to belong to the Pulenta family, creators of the Penaflor Group, which was bought in 2010 by the Argentine Bemberg family. They are a large company with over 1,200 hectares of vineyards and produce wines in all price ranges. A considerable amount of grapes goes into producing grape concentrate, a product of which Argentina is the leading producer on earth. The group is dynamic and invests some 15 million dollars per year. Trapiche produces an impressive 30 million liters of wine per year, and it is the largest exported brand from Argentina. The wines are sound, often big-sized and considerably oaked, but moving toward the top ranges where there must be less commercial pressure, I find more freshness and tension, more drinkability, which is very welcome, even if some wines are still quite big. Some wines in the Terroir Series, which reflects the grapes of small suppliers throughout the province of Mendoza, are simply phenomenal. -- Luiz Gutierrez

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Luis Guttierez

"The 2011 Terroir Series Malbec Finca Orellana is sourced from one plot of vines in the San Carlos quarter of La Consulta (Uco Valley) at 990 meters altitude in the shallow soils of the Tunuyán river bed that is rich in calcium carbonate-covered boulders with sand and very little clay (around 1-2%). Fermentation was in cement with malo and 18 months upbringing in new French oak barrels. Following the sensations I found last year with the 2010 vintage, there are more charred oak, roasted aromas, smoky with ripe black fruit (blackberries, cherries and blackcurrants) but with elegance. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with round, sweet tannins that are quite tasty and long, with good acidity and freshness. 20,000 bottles produced." Drink 2015 - 2020

91/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Smoky blackberry aromas hint at raw charcoal and hickory. A deep, lush mouthfeel is mildly tannic, while toasty flavors of chocolate, herbs and menthol brush shoulders with blackberry and spice. This is big, deep, fruity and oaky on the finish. More time will only help it out; drink from 2016–2023." Drink 2016 - 2023
