A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Sam Kim
"Pure and delicate, the bouquet shows lemon/lime zest, green apple, floral and flinty characters. It's taut and racy on the palate with a juicy mouthfeel and a linear finish backed by bright acidity. A beautiful elegant dry riesling destine to evolve gracefully." (Tasted 2012) Drink 2013 - 2020
18/20 Raymond Chan
"Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with some green hues, lighter on rim. The bouquet is elegantly proportioned and intense with aromas of lemony fruit, minerals, subtle and savoury wet-stone reductive nuances and a hint of toastiness. Dry to taste, the fruit flavours are elegant and positive, with approachable presence. Lime and lemon, with savoury nuances of minerals and honey flow smoothly along a soft-textured palate line. Acid brightness underlines and enlivens the expression. The fruit and phenolics are attractively interwoven with an open mattiness, and the palate leads to a soft, dry, finish with good length. This is a dry Riesling with soft textures and bright fruit. Serve with seafood and Asian-inspired fare over the next 5-7 years. Hand-picked fruit from 21 y.o. vines with no botrytis, fermented to 11.8% alc. and 7.1 g/L rs, TA 8.5 g/L and pH 2.86. RRP $20.00." (Tasted 2013) Drink 2013 - 2020
