The Callejo family owns 60 hectares of low yielding Tempranillo vines (Tinto Fino as it is known in Ribera del Duero) ranging in age from 25-70 years. Felix Callejo uses grapes from its Estate only. The grapes are carefully selected and hand picked into small cases of 30 pounds. Carried in small quantities, there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two selection tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect grapes.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current vintage
"Lively, deep, dense red colour that tints the glass and the tears running down its sides. Deep, delicate aromas of wild forest flowers and the fresh breezes of the high plains mingle harmoniously with ripe tropical fruit characters. Mineral touches reminiscent of underground limestone rock come through against a backdrop of spicy and smoky notes. Hints of just-picked grapes appear on the palate along with fresh tannins that are yet to become fine and polished. Mouth-filling on the palate with a fine-grained texture; the full ripeness of the grapes shows through, followed by a long, lingering finish."
92/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2009 vintage)
"Opaque purple. Spice-accented blackberry and cherry preserve aromas are complicated by notes of violet, woodsmoke, cocoa powder and licorice. Seamless and velvety on the palate, with sappy dark fruit flavors dominating. Vanillin oak and spicecake nuances build with air and carry through a very long, sweet, virtually tannin-free finish. This is delicious now but has the depth to reward patience."
