This remarkable wine is dry but rounded with heaps of body and power. The fruit depth is from long ripening including some noble rot (botrytis) that contentrated the flavours as well as making them softer and more complex - and more approachable young. This is truly an impressive wine to crack now with pork or chicken or to soften further in the cellar.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

4 Stars Michael Cooper

"Late-harvested at Waipara from mature vines and made with 'a good portion' of noble rot, the distinctive 2014 vintage is a very powerful and fleshy wine (14.5 per cent alcohol), with generous, ripe, peachy, slightly honeyed flavours, a vague hint of oak adding complexity, and lots of drink-young appeal."

19/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is tight and intense with a penetrating amalgam of ripe lime and lemony fruit melded with honeysuckle, musk and talc botrytis, along with fresh, piquant citrus and reductive minerally elements. Dryish to taste, the palate has good weight, depth and body with harmoniously entwined flavours of ripe citrus fruits, marmalade and honey, with a musky and minerally layer. The wine is smooth in texture and there is considerable power and drive. The alcohol and lacy acidity are balanced, and the wine has excellent proportion, the dense core unfolding succulent citrus and exotic tropical fruit flavours on a very long and sustained finish. This is a full and substantial dryish Riesling with citrus, marmalade and honied flavours, showing drive, power and balance. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 5-6 years."
