A great back-vintage deal on this truly generous, pre-aged Shiraz. The 'McLaren Vale' is Mr Riggs' top-tier red, sold in a bottle as weighty and sturdy as the wine itself. Great intensity is delivered with real softness and depth, with sweetly ripe compote fruit and chocolate coating the mouth and wrapping up the gentle, age-softened structure. A winner for lovers of the old school hedonistic style, with this cellar age the Mr Riggs is a bargain. Stocks very limited!

Its Origins

Mr Riggs was founded in 2001 as a collaboration between Ben Riggs (with decades of vintages at McLaren Vale’s Wirra Wirra under his belt and his mentor, Penny’s Hill proprietor Tony Parkinson. The winery is positioned at the premium end of the ladder, using Ben’s extensive contacts with growers to cherry pick fruit from Adelaide Hills, Langhorne Creek (internal link to LC region section) and McLaren Vale, among other sites. Mr. Riggs’ winemaking philosophy is to make unpretentious wines that express the essence of the vineyard and the region’s terroir in a style that Ben enjoys drinking; big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance.

What The Critics Say

94/100 James Halliday

"Impenetrable colour, dark and dense, with tar, black fruits and cherry oak all on display; the palate is richly textured, chewy, with ripe tannins and cherry oak and a long Christmas cake spice and fruit finish; a big, muscular wine in every respect." Drink by 2025

19.5/20 Raymond Chan

"The 10th release of this label, the fruit for the 2010 from ‘Penny's Hill', ‘Piebald Gully', ‘Edgehill' and ‘Braden's', fermentation finished in oak. 80% of the oak was French and 20% American. 40% of the barrels were new. 14.5% alc. Very full, saturated purple-black colour. The bouquet is full and voluminous, packed with aromas of fully-ripened black fruits, plums, liquorice and eucalypt with oak spices, all harmoniously interwoven and without any excess. Full-bodied, this is extremely rich and mouthfilling, with multi-layered flavours of rich, fully-ripened black berry and plum fruits, unfolding waves of liquorice and spices, dark chocolate and eucalypt, with oak spice and cedar emerging. Matching the fruit decadence is significant extraction, the tannins very fine-grained, building in texture through the palate line. Good acidity enhances the fruit sweetness providing lift and vibrancy, and the wine carries a very long, sweet-fruited and fully nuanced finish. This is a hedonistic multi-faceted Shiraz with beautifully rich fruit and wonderful textural balance to see 12-15+ years effortless aging. Match with slow-cooked game meat. 732 6-packs made." Drink 2012 - 2027+

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Very deep, rich red colour with purple tinges. Opulent nose with ripe fruit and oak well in evidence. Some smoky and espresso coffee notes. Rich, full-bodied and smooth in the mouth; a big softie. Powerful and concentrated. Not that nuanced at this stage, but very good in its style. Long, long finish." Drink 2013 - 2035. Also 93+/100 from Wine Orbit writing "It's impressively powerful yet velvet-smooth, showing gorgeous aromas of blackberry, dark plum, game, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate is opulent and dense with outstanding fruit concentration, leading to a beautifully balanced, refreshing finish. The richness is beautifully framed by the rounded tannins, making the wine approachable already but no doubt it will age magnificently. At its best: 2013 to 2025.”
