Mitre Rocks vineyard is situated on the lower slopes of Central Otago’s Pisa Range, below the nearby Mitre Rocks formation. The vines grow in glacial schist – low- fertility, alluvial soils typical of the Cromwell Basin. It is a cool climate of continental extremes – hot, dry summers with cool, dry autumns that promote intense flavour development in fruit. The vineyard is intensively and carefully managed by award-winning viticulturists Robin and James Dicey of Grape Vision Ltd. The vines are hand thinned and leaf plucked from low-density vine plantings of Pinot Noir clones 5, 6, 115, 667 and 777 under the direction of award winning winemaker Carol Bunn.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2009 vintage)
"First division Pinot Noir with impressive concentration, complexity and texture. Intense wine with plump, ripe plum, dark cherry and berry flavours. Long with sweet fruit beautifully balanced by fine, ripe tannins.
91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2009 vintage)
"Matured in a similar fashion to the 2008, the 2009 Pinot Noir has a medium-deep ruby-purple color. It displays intense black cherry and black raspberry aromas with subtle scents of cloves, orange peel, some spice box and cedar plus whiffs of thyme, underbrush and moss. Very structured with crisp acidity and firm fine tannins, the fruit and spice flavors fill the full bodied palate, finishing with great persistence. This should be drinking best from 2012 to 2016+."
