A rich and penetrating Nuits St. Georges, the Les Porrets vineyard is at the sweet spot on the Cote d'Or mid-slope, with the ideal mix of free-draining chalky marl over lime bedrock. At this south-east facing aspect, Pinot Noir is able to reach full ripeness slowly while retaining acidity and gaining minerality. A bold Premier Cru with black fruit as well as red, this wine also has the serious spine to improve for decades in cellar. So rare to find this scale of flavour in Burgundy for this price. Well worth adding to the box!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"A ripe, complex and quite densely fruited nose speaks of pungent earth, cassis and the sauvage. There is fine power, size and weight to the large-scaled flavors that brim with dry extract that buffers the moderately rustic tannins on the velvety and mouth coating finish. This is really very good with excellent long-term cellaring potential."

90-93/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"Good bright red with ruby tones. Blackberry aromas lifted by white pepper, violet and a whiff of ginger. Juicy and penetrating, with very good intensity to the dark fruit, licorice and floral flavors; not at all an earthy style. Tight, high-pitched Nuits, finishing with a firm tannic spine and excellent length. Philippe Prost notes that the rather delicate fruit in this vineyard can get too ripe very quickly and must be picked early."
