A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is a lovely dry Riesling displaying delicate and pure aromas of lime zest and floral with a touch of flinty characters. The palate is precise and focused with vibrant acidity and lingering elegant finish. Dry Rieslings can be "lean and mean" when young, not this one. It's already lovely drinking but should develop beautifully to show greater complexity and intensity." (Tasted 2012) Drink 2013 - 2020

"Hand-picked fruit from 19 y.o. vines with no botrytis, fermented to 12.7% alc. and 3.5 g/L rs, TA 6.7 g/L and pH 3.08. Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on edge. This has a very fine, tight and taut bouquet with concentrated aromas of fresh lime and lemony fruit and secondary toasty elements entwined with minerals. There is a zesty, steeliness to the expression. Dry to taste, this is tightly concentrated with lively drive and an underlying acid succulence to the fruit. An array of flavours with citrus fruits, minerals and toast flow with a fine graininess to the texture, the acidity providing balance and tension. The palate is carried to a lingering finish with toasty interest and acid freshness. This is a fresh, lively dry Riesling beginning to exhibit some toasty interest. 18.0+/20 Jun 2013 RRP $20.00."
