An amazing back-vintage release from a great year, the 2009 Armagh is truly something. Clare Valley suffered a heat wave in 2009 but it came fairly early (in January), so with December rains under their belt and mild weather to come, the rest of the season was a long, slow, leisurely harvest. The resulting Armagh thus that has all the ripeness, intense black fruit and layers of spicey/olive nuance arising from huge extraction, but also - since they were able to harvest at exactly the right moment - a beautiful acid freshness and drive that holds this massive wine on its feet, in a harmonious whole. With almost a decade since harvest, this wine has an almost endless future in cellar but is also just about to come into its own. Don't wait!

Its Origins

"The name Jim Barry is synonymous with Clare Valley family winemaking excellence. Graduating in 1947 as the 17th student with a degree at Roseworthy, Jim Barry with his wife Nancy went on to establish his own venture by purchasing property in 1959. Their sons Peter, Mark and John joined to grow the business to what it is today with Peter as the current managing director. Peter’s sons Tom and Sam are about to take over the Barry family reins, but as with such situations, handing over is never easy." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

96+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

" Deep garnet in color, the 2009 The Armagh Shiraz displays a more evolved black plum and kirsch character accented by notes of pencil lead, black olives and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, muscular and a little mute, it has a very taut, firm structure that shows aging promise and a long finish. As it needs some time, drink it from 2015 to 2030+." Drink 2015 - 2030

96/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday

"The vineyard was planted in ?68, a drought year requiring each vine to be hand watered by the family from drums on the back of a tractor, an investment in blood, sweat and tears that has been handsomely repaid. Elegance is not a word usually associated with wines having the dimension of Armagh, but it applies here, yet without betraying the birthright of a wine with exceptional depth to its fusion of dark berries, spices and toasty oak, the latter in the manner of Grange, obvious yet integrated and balanced." Drink by 2049

95/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Dark purple. A hugely aromatic, complex bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, cola, candied licorice, mocha and incense, with a smoky mineral quality adding vivacity and focus. Stains the palate with rich blueberry and cherry liqueur flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Hints of candied flowers, fruitcake and dark chocolate gain strength in the glass and carry through an extremely long, smooth, subtly tannic finish. In a decadent but shockingly lively style, with the sheer mass of assertive fruit to make it accessible on the younger side with some decanter time but also the concentration to reward long-term cellaring." Drink 2021 - 2030
