2009 Felsina Vin Santo (375 ml)
Malvasia and Trebbiano with some Sangiovese
The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2009 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is a jewel of a wine. Rich and sumptuous, but not at all heavy, the 2009 offers up a beguiling mélange of orange peel, honey, dried flowers and candied almond. For readers who want to know what Vin Santo should be, this is it. Amazingly, the mother for the Vin Santo dates back to at least the 1950s!" Drink 2022 - 2032
