Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"This late-release riesling demonstrates the ageing ability of riesling in general and Pegasus Bay Riesling in particular. It is still very fresh with bright lime, citrus and mineral flavours and just a suggestion of toastiness from bottle age. A reasonably dry wine with a little potential still up its sleeve. 8/8/2017." 5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The debut 2007 vintage (5* ) of this 'Aged Release' label in 2017 is a re-release of the decade-old Waipara Valley classic-the first of a planned annual release of 10 year-old wines. Still full of vigour, with a bright, light lemon/green hue and a scented, faintly honeyed bouquet, it is gently sweet and crisp, with lovely poise and energy. Light and vivacious, with deep grapefruit and slight honey flavours, very vibrant and racy, it promises to be very long-lived." (Tasted 2017)
19/20 Raymond Chan
"Dark, deep red colour, a little lighter on the rim with a little bricking. The bouquet is softly full and voluminous with deeply concentrated aromas of savoury dark-red berry fruit harmoniously layered with subtle secondary development notes of dried herbs, undergrowth, a little earth, with suggestions of game, unfolding lifted red floral nuances. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Medium-full bodied has rich and luscious fruit flavours of savoury dark-red berry fruits, dried herbs undergrowth, game and slightly resinous oak suggestions, The flavours form a well-concentrated core, but unfold to fill the mouth to provide plenty od presence. The palate in enlivened by crisp acidity and is framed by a fine-grainy-textured structure under the fruit richness. The wine carries to a strong, fulsome finish of savoury secondary flavours. This is a fulsome, rich-fruited Pinot Noir with complex secondary flavours of savoury red fruits, undergrowth and dried herbs on a well concentrated, but lively palate. Match with coq au vin and casseroles over the next 4-5 years. Waipara estate fruit indigenous yeast fermented with 10% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 3-4 weeks on skins, and aged 18 months in 14% new French oak. 19.0/20 Jul 2017 RRP $65.00."
