muga, Rioja, Spain
This is a classic Gran riserva Rioja and its presented in a beautiful wooden six pack. Released when it is ready to drink ( a big bonus! ) and aged in large oak. A supremely elegant, complex red that has no hard edges. This is how great rioja used to be made.
" Deep red. A complex, heady bouquet of dried red berries, sandalwood, rose oil, black tea and licorice pastille. Smooth, focused and gently sweet cherry and raspberry flavors coat the palate, with gentle but integrated tannins providing shape. This silky, seamless wine finishes with a strong echo of candied flowers, spices and minerals."93/100 Tanzer
"The garnet-colored 2001 Prado Enea Gran Reserva exhibits aromas of wood smoke, vanilla, pencil lead, damp earth, and spice box. Firm and elegant, this racy, classically-styled Rioja can be enjoyed now but should drink well through 2021." 91 /100 Parker

muga, Rioja, Spain
"The 2004 Muga Reserva Seleccion Especial is deep crimson-colored. Dense and packed, it offers up aromas of cedar, spice box, mineral, pencil lead, and assorted black fruits. It nicely conceals enough structure for 6-8 years of evolution. This lengthy effort should drink well through 2030."94/100 Parker
"Saturated ruby color. Oak-spiced raspberry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by smoky minerals, pipe tobacco and incense. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, displaying impressively concentrated red and dark berry liqueur flavors and a late note of candied licorice. A strong cherry-vanilla quality lingers on the long, sappy finish. Extremely impressive Rioja, deftly balancing energy and power" 93/100 Tanzer. Amazing and will age another 10-20 years!!!

Vinea Familiae, Tuscany, Italy
In an age of instant satisfaction its nice to find wines where traditionally they have been aged before release. Here's an excellent value brunello we've brought in where increasingly the prices of Brunellos are starting close to $100.00 for the same quality.
This Brunello comes from the best central positions of the vineyards of the family Nardi in Montalcino (Tuscany ) and is made from 100% Sangiovese grown on slate. The wine spent two years in oak followed by storage in bottles prior to its release last year. Ruby-red colour with garnet reflexes, intensive and multilayered bouquet of red berries, black pepper and carnations, strong structure with soft tannin and great length. It is still showing youthfulness and should age for another 5 years easily wherupon it will become even suppler and rounder.

Sandrone, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape that is responsible for the great wines of Piedmont's Langhe and Monferrato hills: Barolo and Barbaresco. These are the most coveted of Italian wines among international collectors. Notoriously difficult to cultivate, Nebbiolo tends to be planted in the warmest hillside sites, where drainage is excellent. "This is a very strong set of entry-level wines from Luciano Sandrone, one of Piedmont's top growers. In a region full of outspoken, colourful producers, Sandrone remains soft-spoken and rather shy, but his wines speak for themselves rather eloquently. The 2006 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is made from a vineyard in the emerging Roero district. It is an especially generous Nebbiolo in this vintage. Perfumed aromatics meld into super-ripe red cherries, spices, flowers and toasted oak. The wine offers outstanding depth and richness in a full-bodied, racy style. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016." Sandrone, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy
One of the most important Italian grapes, the Barbera produces half of all the red wine found in northern Italy. Barbera is productive and grows very well in warm to hot climates. Known for its low tannins and high acidity (hard to acheive in hotter climes) the Barbera can range from light and tart to hearty and robust, factors which are determined by the age of the vines and the amount of oak ageing. Flavors and aromas of cherries, plums, red currants and raspberries are common.
"The 2006 Barbera d'Alba is a jewel. The wine sparkles with layers of vibrant dark fruit intermingled with sweet toasted oak, showinf outstanding length, purity and above all else, tons of class. This is a delicious wine from Luciano Sandrone. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014."90/100 Parker

Donnhoff, Nahe, Germany
Helmut Donnhoff is a world famous riesling producer from the Nahe. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dynnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Donnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Donnhoff. The Donnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Top line rieslings.

Sandrone, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy
The 2003 Barolo Le Vigne may have a slight edge over the Cannubi Boschis in this vintage, as the ability to blend fruit from various microclimates was a big advantage. It is a full-bodied, soft-textured Barolo with lively color and plenty of ripe red fruit, menthol and spices. This is an especially fresh, vibrant wine for the vintage, with tannins that are particularly refined. A recent vertical of Le Vigne back to 1995 found the 1995, 1997 and 1998 drinking well and the 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 approachable, but still with additional upside potential. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully. I have been following Sandrone's 2003 Barolos since just after the harvest. Over the last few years they have developed remarkably, and today are among the most successful Barolos of the vintage, particularly for the softness of their tannins, something which few producers were able to achieve. Both the Cannubi Boschis and Le Vigne were perfectly fresh and intact when I re-tasted them after 48 hours had passed. "Clearly 2003 was a challenging vintage. We used less of the fruit from our warmer microclimates for Le Vigne, although obviously we didn't have that luxury with Cannubi Boschis. In a sense it is a return to the past in that multi-commune Barolos had an advantage over single-vineyard wines. We did everything we could to maintain as much freshness as possible in the wines. We fermented using lower temperatures and bottled earlier than normal." 93/100 Parker

'Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of blackberry, roast coffee and smoke. Less expressive than the Champs-Perdrix but broader and more voluminous, with a seamless texture. The long, lush finish features nicely buffered sweet tannins'89-91 Tanzer
"A touch of reduction knocks down the nose but the mineral-infused, serious, rich and nicely full flavors culminate in a somber, linear and impressively long finish. This is very primary, indeed backwards and is probably showing very little of what it ultimately will produce."88-91 Burghound
