Created from specially selected vineyards in the McLaren, Ben Riggs has made this wine with 20% new French oak. This wine shows excellent integration of Shiraz fruit with the gentle use of oak creating a big, rich, juicy, smooth style of red, finishing with spicy elegance. Co- fermented with a tiny amount of Viognier, just one or two percent, the nose is delicately perfumed and the palate softened. The Gaffer is a flavoursome, fruit-driven, full-bodied Shiraz that is well balanced and assured to please the palate.

"This powerful Shiraz shows distinctive regional characters of dark chocolate, black prunes, pepper, licorice and spicy cedary oak on the palate, with ripe loganberry fruit and oak perfectly integrated.
This well structured wine is approachable now, however has the power and concentration to guarantee longer term cellaring up to 10 years under the right conditions."

Rated a 5 star winery by Halliday who writes "Shingleback has substantial vineyards in McLaren Vale, all of which are vinified for the Shingleback labels...Quality has risen greatly. It has followed its 2006 Jimmy Watson Trophy for its '05 D Block Cabernet Sauvignon with continuing success for that wine and similar wines in both domestic and overseas wine shows."
